Anterio Sloan Decommits; Nebraska Now Down To 5 Recruits For 2010 E-mail

And here we go again.

4* CB Anterio Sloan (West Helena, Arkansas) has opened his recruiting back up and from what he says, I wouldn't get real excited about his chances of suiting up for the Huskers next fall (link.)  Says Anterio:

"Auburn, Kentucky and Mississippi State are on me real hard," the 5-foot-9, 165-pound Sloan said. "Those are the only three schools on me real hard. Auburn hasn't offered yet, but they've been sending me a ton of mail."

"I'm also thinking I really want to see how Auburn, Kentucky and Mississippi State are going to be. They are the schools recruiting me the hardest so they probably have the edge right now. I'd say it would be Auburn at the top and then Kentucky and then Mississippi State and then Nebraska. That would be my top four."

Evidently, junk mail is the way to win over this kid's heart. Nebraska's failure to recruit Anterio 'real hard' might have something to do with the fact that he committed back on April 5th.  The best part about his list is that Auburn sits at the top.  Not only has Anterio not visited the school, but Auburn has yet to offer him.  Anterio's just one recruit and by what he just recently said, I'm not sure if he's the right fit here anyway.

With Keeston Terry recently decommitting in favor of Kansas and now Sloan on his way to the SEC, Nebraska's list for 2010 sits at a cool five.  Take a look at how Nebraska compares to the Big 12 right now courtesy of Scout:

RANK SCHOOL COMMITS AVG. RANK
1 Oklahoma 22 3.59
2 Texas 29 3.89
9 Oklahoma State 22 3.27
10 Texas A&M 20 3.35
21 Texas Tech 18 2.94
34 Baylor 12 2.92
36 Missouri 13 2.77
38 Kansas 12 2.83
53 Nebraska 5 3.60
67 Kansas State 10 2.40
77 Colorado 4 3.00
90 Iowa State 4 2.50

We're not exactly Iowa State or Colorado right now, but then again we don't need to be worrying about that.  We do have a solid five recruits and that is reflected by the 'average ranking' there. The problem is that number is only five and right now it's not close to Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Missouri, and Kansas - never mind Oklahoma and Texas.

It's August and I know we will fill this class by February. However, take a look at the recruits we have lined up for visits this fall in Lincoln right here.  10 recruits is all and one of those is Donovan Vestal. While these other schools continue to fill up their classes and ours continues to fluctuate around five, the pool of recruits we have to choose from begins to dwindle down.  Let's get the ball rolling here.

The trend now is to fill classes earlier and earlier into the year. As of today, the average BCS school already has over 10 commits ( http://recruiting.scout.com/a....=2&yr=2010 ). It remains unclear whether, as result, it is impossible for NU to assemble a top 20 class if it waits until October/November to start nailing down most of its commits. Regardless of the answer, I certainly won't begrudge the staff's decision NOT to fill the class for the sake of filling the class. One should also note that many of the "commits" out there are not necessarily off the board -- just as schools tend to fill their classes earlier, "commitments" are becoming more a reflection of what school currently leads in an ongoing recruiting process than an iron-clad guarantee as to who they'll sign with come February.

Overall, I'm not yet worried. If we take care of business on the field this season, you can rest assured that we'll (again) out recruit the rest of the Big XII North and, in so doing, take another BIG step toward positioning ourselves atop the division. Only after reclaiming a dominant position over our most immediate rivals (and, in turn, becoming a fixture in the Big XII C.G.) can we ever hope to start seriously competing with UT and OU both on and off the field.

I agree the last thing I want to see is this class rushed. The Mack Brown's of the world have turned recruiting upside down with their focus on filling classes before the season. Hell, even Pete Carroll has had to change things up. Nebraska won't ever be able to do that because we don't have the plethora of instate talent. It is unfortunate, however, when you are the Nebraska's of the college football world right now in recruiting and you lose early 4* commits. Like I said there, there are only so many of these blue chip kids out there and they are going to start committing in the next few months.

Like you said, GFW, winning matters most at the end of the day.

We do have a solid five recruits and that is reflected by the 'average ranking' there

Not to piss on this parade, but many recruits haven't been ranked by Rivals yet. I know we (Mizzou) have three kids that haven't been ranked at all by Rivals yet (ironically, all three play for the same HS in Texas). In reality, we have three 4* players and none under a 3*, so average in zeros for those three that haven't been ranked, and it gives you a false indication on that average.

Hey, I'm not pissing on your parade of recruits up there. All I said is that our recruits are pretty solid up to this point - all 5 of them - which they are or they wouldn't be ranked yet. Just wait until we start filling up with some Nebraska kids - our numbers aren't going to stay that high nor did I make any reference up there that they would.

no, no, no...I'm not taking it like that. I'm just saying that right now, several recruits haven't been evaluated. I haven't looked (and really have no desire to right now) but I'm just guessing several of Baylor's, kU's, Mizzou's, K-State's, and probably TT's recruits are given a zero and it's bringing that average down. Just looking at the entire number of recruits and their average. I think Baylor's got one or two 4*'s right now.
