Much to cover here so let's get started.

Dr. D

Suh-HelmetThe Perspicacity of SUH - Buddha. Yoda. Shakira. And now SUH. The great ones need only one name, just ask Texas QB Colt McCoy. SUH is not only the most dominant physical specimen to play college football in recent memory, but he is also wise beyond his years. While accepting the Lombardi award in Houston on Wednesday, SUH apologized to TCU's Jerry Hughes for the penultimate play in Dallas last weekend. SUH astutely observed that rushing Colt McCoy forced him to throw instead of holding the ball-if McCoy throws that ball just 1 second later....well, we'd be hearing of title ring fittings this week, SUH would be 3 days away from becoming the first defensive lineman to win the Heisman and Hughes would be playing Bama for the title. The irony of SUH's observation regarding this monumental course of events is that less than 3 months ago SUH's decision NOT to force Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor to throw on the final meaningful play of that game was cited as a critical moment in that heartbreaking 1 point loss...these points are not lost upon SUH. The SUH abides, and learns. His 2 year improvement under the Pelinis has been nothing short of astounding. He just completed one of, if not the best season in Husker history, and will leave as one of our most decorated players ever. In lieu of a Big 12 title, Big SUH will have to settle for the #1 overall pick and a $60 million dollar contract. I expect great things from our big man each and every Sunday in the years to come. I heart SUH!

Texas Sized Wallets Are No Match For The Pope - If you think Mack Brown making $5 million per to coach the Longhorns is sick, just imagine what the next Notre Dame coach to win a national title will make? $10 million minimum in today's dollars. Nobody has deeper pockets than the Irish--business is good in South Bend even during a global recession. And ND is also very serious about their football-after all they call it Touchdown Jesus, not Jesus Touchdown. ND is desperate after a 21st consecutive title-less season and they need to get this hire right to avoid spending another 5 years wandering in the desert. If they hire Brian Kelly, that just may reach the promised land...

Turner-gill-kuRock Chalk You'll End Up A Drunk Like Your Dad - Mark Mangino is out and the Jayhawks are looking for a football coach. Turner Gill should get this job. He knows the league, knows the recruiting base well and has a long proud history of kicking every other North teams' ass (including the Jayhawks) for the better part of the past 30 years. Gill has proven himself to be a winning head coach-winning a conference title at Buffalo?? How many BCS coaches could do that? Rich Rod has 10 times the talent at Michigan, but wouldn't have won the MAC the past 2 years with the performance of his teams. Gill has shown that he can build a program from nothing into a consistent competitor--the exact profile KU needs as they look to bring consistent football success to the Jayhawks. What should seal the deal from AD Lew Perkins's standpoint is that there is absolutely ZERO chance that Gill's tenure at KU would end as ignominiously as Mark Mangino's did. Hiring a stand up guy like Gill is the best way to send the signal that the university has moved past the negative publicity that has hounded them for the past month-they owe Tiger a debt of gratitude for stealing the spotlight, otherwise we might be hearing more of the Mangino story. This choice should be easy--Turner Gill should be able to preside over 52 point victories again in Lawrence--just as he did in 1981 as the Husker starting QB.

Gary-Pinkel-MotorcycleThere's No Room For Dyslexia In The Coaches Poll - For the second straight year, Gary Pinkel is doing his damnedest to ruin the credibility of the Coaches Poll (you can see how all of the coaches voted here.)  Pinkel ranks undefeated Boise State #9.  Some of the teams he ranks ahead of Boise:  #6 Ohio State (10-2), #7 Oregon (10-2), and #8 Penn State (10-2.)  I'm not sure if he remembers when Boise beat Oregon this season, but they did.  Coming in at #10 on his ballot is Iowa, who - if he recalls - beat his #8 ranked Penn State team earlier this season.  Further down the rankings he has Pittsburgh #17 and West Virginia  #18 - WVU beat Pitt two weeks ago.  And just when you think you've seen enough, he rounds out his rankings with #24 Oregon State and then #25 Arizona - Arizona beat Oregon State 37-32 in September.

In his final regular season poll in 2008, Notre Dame blog Rakes of Mallow was quick to annoint Pinkel the "Douche Bag of the Week" and said:

"Gary Pinkel!  Dearest Gary voted #7 Utah, #9 Boise State and #11 TCU at fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth respectively.  Then he placed his 9-4 Tigers at #18 (still 7 spots lower than Ty).  Teams he felt were better than #7 Utah: Ohio State, Georgia Tech, Oregon, OK State, Georgia, Michigan State and Cincinnati.  He also dropped Ball State completely (which is debatable) and ranked Boston College ahead of Virginia Tech (after the Hokies beat the Eagles 30-12 on Saturday in front of literally dozens of fans in Tampa).  You suck, Gary Pinkel."

Touchdown-JesusHold On There A Minute - Currently, Notre Dame has the #12 best recruiting class according to Rivals.  One recruit - the #16 overall prospect in the country in DE Chris Marin - has opened up his recruiting but it appears the rest are going to stay firm (because they are Notre Dame.)  The Irish have entertained Cincinnati's Brian Kelly and UConn's Randy Edsall thus far in their coaching search, but I still believe they should wait until after the bowl games to go for the home run when coaches might be listening a bit more.  I'm not sure what the hurry is right now, and I still refuse to believe that Urban Meyer wouldn't show a little more interest come January 2nd.

School's Out For Winter - You have to love that Alabama cancelled classes the 6th, 7th, and 8th so their students and faculty can travel to Pasadena.  Maybe I'm getting old, but since when do college kids return to classes three days after January 1st?

My Christmas Wish List - lane-recliner Here's your 2009 Bowl gifts that each team will receive this year. The Nebraska players will each get a Flo TV personal television, Best Buy gift card, a Tourneau watch, and a Sports Tek hooded sweatshirt and cap.  Without doubt, the Sugar Bowl participants get the grand prize: a gift suite from Sony, Apple, Trek, Garmin, and Weber, a Timely Watch Co. watch, New Era cap, Ogio Politan laptop pack, and a Lane Recliner.  They could have stopped with the watch and the gift suite and I would've been happy, but tossing in a Lane Recliner to boot makes this gift basket nothing short of winning the grand prize on the Price Is Right.

Said Colt McCoy:

"Funny story: I graduated on Saturday but I didn't get to walk. Somebody asked me if I graduated and I said 'yes.' And they said, 'But you played, you didn't get to walk.' And I said, 'You're right, I ran. I ran all over the place.'"
