Bo Pelini's Post Game News Conference E-mail

There are many things that can be said about where it all went wrong for the Huskers vs. Texas Tech.  Pick a unit and there's plenty of blame.

I'll have some thoughts about this game and the Big 12 North soon.  The only thing I have to say right now is that it's now or never with Cody Green in 2009.  With Iowa State @ home next Saturday and then @ Baylor the following week, you really couldn't be asking for a better spot to get him acclimated as the #1 QB - as he should be.  And since it's ultimately Bo Pelini's decision, I have faith he'll do just that whether Shawn Watson wants to or not.  The bottom line is that this team isn't going anywhere until the offense makes some changes.

I think it's safe to assume that the offensive players/coaches are not going to be going to a pleasant work environment this week.

ZAC LEE'S DECISION-MAKING
I love it when QBs keep their eyes downfield. But there's a limit. On multiple occasions yesterday, NU's receivers were bottled up downfield and, instead of scrambling for a modest gain in the face of an open short field, Lee refused to move and took a sack and a 5-6 yard loss. Similarly, Lee continually passed up an open Helu in the flats on plays that ultimately resulted in sacks or balls thrown away. I know you can't live on those 2-3 yard gains. Every once in a while, though, Helu can make someone miss and turn it into a first down. Like Craig James said during the telecast when Helu broke one of those small passes for a big gain: "get your playmakers the ball."

WATSON'S PLAYCALLING
I still think he's a great coach, but maybe it's time to revisit our gameplan. Last year during the Mizzou loss he decided our power run game wasn't clicking and shifted to more spread sets. This year, for want of Ganz or Swift/Peterson on the outside, our quick passing game just isn't working. I wouldn't scrap it altogether. It just shouldn't be the sum total of our offense. Perhaps now is the time to use some more 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB sets like we saw at VT. On a more general note, not playing at a quicker pace during the second half was inexcusable. When you need to outscore your opponent by 21 in 30 minutes, you CANNOT continually snap the ball with 5 seconds or less on the playclock. The nadir was the 7:30 minute possession that spanned two quarters and resulted in no points. Just when it seemed like we might score with time remaining in the 3rd, I watched in disbelief as the offense kept strolling to the line and bleeding the clock. What a nightmare.

NILES PAUL
I love the kid. He did a lot to win the game last week. But not running after that lateral/fumble was inexcusable. Although it was an OBVIOUS backward pass on TV, he clearly did not realize this fact. Nevertheless, you MUST play to the whistle even when you're on offense.
My two cents

Assuming we are not changing coaches at this point in the year, my amateur/back-driver opinion is:

Offensively -
*We need to find a way get the ball in the hands of our two best players - Helu and McNeil
*Use a fullback, and run up the middle
*Play Brooks and Cooper because they CAN catch
*Set up some plays - fake the reverse once before running it so obviously
*Throw the ball deep to soften up the safeties

Defensively -
*Stop messing around with Comptom and get Dillard on the field ASAP

Accentuate your strengths.
