The College Football Weekend Roundup E-mail

I've got plenty of burning issues here so let's get to it.

**If you listen to our gambling advice, sorry about the roller coaster ride yesterday.  After starting off 1-3 with only our lock - Alabama - hitting, we finished off with 3 straight to get to 4-3.  For future reference, bet against Rice the rest of the season.  And knock on wood, Nebraska has covered every game this season.

**Colorado entered the Texas game as a 34 point underdog and more than held their own until Cody Hawkins threw an INT for a TD in the 3rd quarter.  However, the big story for the Buffaloes was Dan Hawkins burning the redshirt of sophomore Tyler Hansen.  Hawkins has maintained all year that Cody was the only QB playing because they wanted Hansen for the next 3 years.  Well, now that his redshirt is gone, it should be interesting to see who gets the start next week when Kansas comes to Boulder.  And by the way, that's not going to be an easy win for the Jayhawks.

**Texas had a strong second half last night and the Florida defense dominated an inept LSU offense (#109 ranked total offense), but I don't think anyone would beat Alabama right now - especially with Tebow's concussion.  All the pieces are there and their schedule works out nice the rest of the way.  The SEC Championship has the makings to be one of the best regular season games we've seen in a long time.  Watching Alabama and Florida's defenses on the same field for 60 minutes?  Are you kidding me?

Alabama-Defense

**Not sure if you caught this Turner Gill 'Outside the Lines' video or not, but it's definitely worth your time to watch.  Now to the unqualified, over-hyped Gene Chizek.  2-14 in Big 12 play in two seasons at Iowa State.  Starts off 5-1 at Auburn (destroyed 44-23 by Arkansas on Saturday) and now everyone loves Gene.  Here's the reality.  The only thing the Gene has done right in the past three years was hire Gus Malzahn and his 'Pistol' offense away from Tulsa.  Check Auburn's NCAA D1 numbers out (as of today.)  Gus Malzahn's offense:  #5 total offense, #7 rushing offense, #41 passing offense, & #10 scoring offense.  Gene Chizek's  defense: #67 total defense, #82 scoring defense, #84 rushing defense, & #30 pass efficiency defense.  The bottom line is Gene Chizek was a suspect hire at Auburn.  There's no question Turner Gill was more qualified for that job.  I'm not going to dive into the topic, but Charles Barkley was 100% right.

Much more including Ndamukong Suh, Bobby Bowden & Paul Johnson, and Kansas & Missouri after the jump --->

**Trust me, I know Suh has no chance of winning the Heisman Trophy as a DT.  Read these links for the national exposure - ESPN, CNNSI, & Vote.  And even though Tim Tebow will probably be a close 2nd, it's Colt McCoy's trophy this year.  However, after those two, the Heisman race couldn't be any more wide open right now which could leave the door open for him to at least get a plane ticket to New York. Jimmy Clausen?  As Desmond Howard said on Gameday, engineering two late drives vs. Purdue and Washington means absolutely nothing.  After that though, maybe you have Tony Pike in consideration but I think in a year like this, the media and college football fans would love to see a defensive tackle such as Suh get the recognition that so many defensive player before him have deserved.

**Anyone else notice the empty seats in Tallahassee last night for the Georgia Tech game?  When former CNNSI contributor Jenn Sterger tweets - "Bobby Bowden refusin 2 step down is like when ur grandparents refuse 2 give up their car keys. We luv u, just tired of u crashing into [stuff]!" - you know things are escalating quickly. Bowden looks lost on the sidelines - at least throw a fake headset on.  Also, I couldn't be happier with the way things are going in Lincoln right now with Pelini, but does anyone else wonder what it might be like if we hired Paul Johnson and his absolutely unstoppable triple option?  I love watching Georgia Tech play.  Great, great hire and possibly the coach that put the nail in Bowden's coffin.

**Anyone care to admit how many times they've watched the 4th quarter from the Missouri game on ESPN 360?  Double digits here.

And finally,

**de·ni·al: An unconscious defense mechanism characterized by refusal to acknowledge painful realities, thoughts, or feelings.

The day Nebraska resurfaced with better coaching, better players, and better recruits is the day the fine people from Kansas and Missouri knew was going to happen but positively wouldn't be ready for.  Especially now that it's right around the corner.  The reality is that although you've had a few nice seasons and beat up on a Bill Callahan infused football program for a few years, those days are gone. Here are some comments and quotes from the blogosphere I thought you might enjoy:

From the comments @ Kansas blog Oread Boom Kings,

"Watching this game as a KU fan, neither of these teams scare me. Neither does Iowa State.* *subject to change"

"Nebraska was not impressive in the least, but with that D-Line (read: Suh) they could absolutely go 6-2 with losses to us and Oklahoma. We’re gonna have to take one from either Tech or OU."

"Funny that everyone other than Nub fans realize that Mizzou just shot themselves in the foot and Nebraska had great field position for two TDs. A young team shot themselves in the foot. Both teams looked godawful. Order restored."

"Oh I’m with you that Nebraska is offensively as bad as any team in the Big 12."

From Mizzourah,

"This game mattered more for the Huskers with their horrendous schedule.... The Huskers aren't a really good team, and will lose some games, which opens the door (for Missouri)...It's still the first conference game, and the Huskers have the worst schedule out of Nebraska, kU, and Mizzou.... If Mizzou can pull it out next week, I'll take this loss... I still think TTech could torch you guys..I can see both teams (hell, all three) going 1-2 in their south games. The big game happens when Nebraska goes to Lawrence. Mizzou has the best shot at 2-1, and it'd take some of the pressure off of this loss if we win next week in Stillwater. "

From Blair Kerkhoff (KC Star) last weekend before the game,

"But at this moment, in the stare down leading up to Thursday’s prime-time clash, the Tigers are a step ahead. The Cornhuskers might even be on the North Division bronze medal stand behind Kansas. Strange, isn’t it, for a glamour program to chase anybody, but this margin has been earned by the Tigers, who hold a recent edge on several measuring sticks. In Gabbert and wide receiver Danario Alexander, Missouri has superior playmakers. Something else works for Mizzou. There’s not a player in the program who has ever thought of Nebraska the way Tigers, Jayhawks, Wildcats and everybody else did a few years ago. Times have changed."

And finally a comment from an intelligent Missouri fan at Rock M Nation,

"Why does it feel like all the good work we’ve done over the last three years to build our program over theirs has been gone."

Exactly.

Bobby Bowden. Ugh. Put that old dog out of his misery. Every time I hear the media say "he gets to decide when to hang it up" I laugh. Let him stick around...I'm sure the ACC loves all of the credibility his top rate program brings to the conference. I only wish Pederson would have been smart enough to schedule them 7 years ago.

He has not know what he's doing to that program. Sure, he built them from the ground up, but wouldn't you think he'd also want to do what's best and not go out like this? He's in it right now solely to catch Paterno - which he's not going to be able to do.
