Let The Tyler Gabbert Decommitment Countdown Begin E-mail

Hopefully, I'm wrong there.

I've heard of two coaches now taking helicopters to recruit:  UCLA's Rick Neuheisal and Missouri's Gary Pinkel.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.  However, when it comes to recruiting kids committed to Nebraska, I should probably address it.

helicopter-recruiting

Seen last week hovering above the glorious skies of the 'Don't Show Me State' and landing on the Parkway West stadium concourse was none other than Gary Pinkel.  Tyler Gabbert is the starting Qb at Parkway West and of course, a Husker commit like his older brother, Blaine Gabbert, was at one time.

According to Gabbert's father, Pinkel said, "I want to say hi to the mother of my starting quarterback."  (It pains me, but I'm going to leave that quote alone.)

Said Tyler, "I have a couple Nebraska banners and blankets, but I still have my Mizzou gear that I wear down to the games and stuff. I don't have, like, Nebraska wallpaper." And according to that article in the St. Louis Today, Tyler Gabbert keeps using the words 'for now' everytime he refers to his commitment to Nebraska.

Anyways, here's the bottom line.  Former MU Qb Blaine (seriously, if it's not Blaine then it's Chase) Dalton was dismissed recently which means there is a little more room at Qb for the Tigers.  However, it would be somewhat surprising if Gabbert would decommit to Nebraska as Missouri already has highly touted Qb James Franklin in their 2010 class and their current top three quarterbacks on the depth chart are 2 sophomores and 1 freshman.  I'm comfortable in saying that Gabbert would be the only Qb in Nebraska's 2010 class and as far as the future holds, he'd more than likely be two years behind Cody Green if he were to redshirt next season - and I'm sure he would. I'm not going trying to convince you otherwise, we need a Qb in this class and after seeing how talented Blaine is, Tyler would be a great addition even though he's 5 inches shorter.

If you could get back to us sometime before February, Tyler, that would be fantastic.

Mizzou

I still don't see Gabbert heading to CoMo. He didn't come to Mizzou due to the logjam, yet we've already got Franklin for '10 and Corbin Berkstresser in '11. Add in Blaine, Jimmy Costello, and Ashton Glaser, all of who are Sophs or Freshman.

GP was taking the choppa around to check on several recruits...not just Gabbert.

Same as Neuheisal checking on several recruits - with Franklin in your class I'd be shocked to see Gabbert want to compete with someone like that the same age.

Two Gabberts committed to Nebraska and then bolt to Missouri seems a little much. I doubt it will happen but you never know with older brother big man on campus.

By all accounts, the younger Gabbert is a great ballplayer. But his size just isn't there. Whether he comes to NU or not, my guess is that he never sees the field as a full-time starter.
